Dublin is 3 dimensional

Just the other day building shapes appeared in Google Maps for Dublin. But better still if you open Google Earth and make sure "3D Buildings" is ticked you can see it all in proper 3D.

It's now safe to use Gmail

After almost 6 years of being Google's second most popular application; Gmail was officially released onto the unsuspecting public yesterday. Legions of internet users flocked to the site, eagerly hammering in their login details and marvelling at the absense of the tiny tag they're so used to seeing nestle happily beside the logo.

The sound of millions of shrugged shoulders echoed across cyberspace soon after and the same legions swiftly logged out again and continued with their lives. The tag was gone but nothing else had changed.

Whether the internet as we know it can continue after this monumental realignment remains to be seen, we're almost positive that Google has a backup of the beta graphic in case of emergency but until then we will proceed with caution and report back here of anything unusual or beta-esque.

Output caching with masterpages in asp.net (VB)

If you've ever tried to add output caching to a masterpage you'll probably have had problems with failed compilations and general errors.

The problem lies in the fact that the output cache code has to be added programatically, once you realise this it's easily implemented and will help improve site performance.

The following snippet of code placed in your pageload event will go someway towards speeding your site up as far as the end user is concerned.

Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.ServerAndPrivate)
Response.Cache.SetValidUntilExpires(True)

Filezilla and Gumblar

It's interesting to read that the team behind Filezilla (one of the prime suspects in the Gumblar virus fiasco - as it apparently stores its passwords in plain text!) seem not only dismissive but also vaguely insulting towards a genuine questioning of how best to improve the security of their own software!

There's recently an abundance of bus services offering free WIFI in Ireland, however this is also available outside the bus if you're nearby. If you're ever stuck in traffic beside an Aircoach for example give it a try (if you're the passenger of course).

Beware the Gumblar!

Please be aware that there is presently a bad piece of Malware making the rounds called the “Gumblar” virus (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10251779-83.html ). It appear to be able to take your FTP details and use them to maliciously insert code into any site you have access to.

It is very easy to get infected so please download a copy of “Malware Bytes” from http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and check your PC. If it finds any viruses, remove them and request your FTP password to be changed by emailing your user details to support@fusio.net

If you have FTP with anyone else you should do the same regarding changing your passwords.

It's nice when a new browser comes along that does things different and works too. Apple's new Safari version 4 is packed with new ways to view sites and look through bookmarks and history such as Cover Flow and a great Top Sites intro page.

It's also very fast..
